Gurgaon, October 2015: While many words have been spoken about cardiovascular diseases, very few mentioned Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). Falling under the umbrella of cardiovascular diseases, ACS can be defined as the symptoms or the initial signals such as heart attack and unstable symptoms that hint towards a heart disease or a blocked artery. Taking into account the less awareness regarding ACS and development in the field of ACS patient care Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon organised a major international conference on ACS and latest trend and development in the artery related ailment.

Dr. Ghose completed post graduate training in internal medicine from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh and was awarded MD (Medicine) in 1993. He was also awarded DNB (Medicine) by the National Board of Examinations in 1993.Inaugurated by Dr Dharminder Nagar, Managing Director and Dr. Kousar Ali Shah, ZD, Paras Hospitals, the 2nd Acute Coronary Syndrome Summit, presented by the Department of Cardiology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon also had Dr Dr Mohaned Egred, the 3rd largest volume operator in UK, as the International Faculty. While World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates Coronory Artery diseases (CAD) to be the leading causes of mortality in world.

“While CAD is considered to be the leading cause of mortality and morbidity, ACS becomes the commonest cause of mortality. A lot of awareness and campaign has been conducted to talk about the cardiovascular diseases, almost negligible has been mentioned about ACS. The organised summit bids to bridge the existing gap and help create awareness about the increasing burden of ACS in the country, especially in cities like Gurgaon, where the lives are dominated by the hectic day schedule that further leads to CAD and CVD,” said Dr. Tapan Ghose, Director & HOD , Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.

Highlighting the development and trend in the field of ACS patient care, two angioplasties were done in the morning by Dr Tapan Ghosh,Director & HOD , Cardiology and Dr Mohamed Egred in the morning session of the summit using scaffold. The angioplasties were followed by a discussion session that threw light on clinical presentation of ACS, triage of ACS patients, initial management, inintervention management, surgical management and life style changes post ACS. The discussion also stressed on role of changes in the lifestyle. The westernisation of the food practices, genetic factors, various risk factors of CAD were discussed . Besides, the platform also revealed high levels of conventional risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome to be among the factors determining the rising trend of ACS in India.

“ACS has been neglected issue in India. Lack of awareness and knowledge around the issue is prevalent. Therefore it is important to raise awareness and educate people about the same. Our lifestyle has greater impact in our health condition than any other risk factors. Habits such as smoking are considered to be one of the most severe risk factors for ACS. Besides, conventional factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes are the other two that increases the probability for ACS. However, while we discuss the growing risk factors for CVD, very less knowledge has been disseminated regarding ACS among the masses. Resultantly, many fall prey to the condition due to ignorance. Thus the summit only intends to highlight the rapid advancement in the field of both non invasive and invasive cardiology related to ACS patient care but also take measures to spread awareness among public,” said Dr. Ghose.

The need for quick ECG and triage of these patients into ST elevation MI ( requiring unsent transradial primary PTCA vs NSTEMVACS requiring initial stabilization followed by risk based approach to the management by Dr. Ghose.

Themed as “Transradial approach to ACS”, the summit, accredited by Haryana Medical Council concluded with a symposium that was attended by 180 doctors from Delhi-NCR. The symposium was addresses by Dr Egred and Dr Tapan Ghose, who primarily spoke about the utility of the Bio- Vascular Scaffolds and experience of Bio Vascular Scaffold (BVS), respectively. Dr Ghose also presented Paras PAMI- ASIA BVS study involving Transradial Deployment of BVS in Acute Heart attack. Additionally, as a special attraction the summit also conducted an ECG quizzes that turned out to be a much appreciated session of the summit. All the winners of the quiz competition were applauded with attractive prizes.
